Council dealt with forty four callouts during cold snap

Since the beginning of the cold spell, 44 call outs have been made to deal with treacherous roads. Throughout the 2009/2010 winter period a total of 131 call outs were made.

This information was relayed by engineer Iarla Moran at the Claremorris Electoral Area meeting this week.

Cathaoirleach of the County Council, Councillor Michael Burke, said that he appreciated that Mayo County Council is doing the best in circumstances in gritting the main roads and he complimented the local council staff and community groups in the Claremorris Electoral Area in their work.

However Cllr Richard Finn and Cllr Tom Connolly said that the “lethal” road from Kiltimagh to Claremorris is not being salted, even though it connects these two towns.

Cllr Patsy O’Brien said that in his area of Ballinrobe there have been six accidents on one particular road and this road, “I know hasn’t a chance of getting on the list.” Cllr O’Brien said that a community based response is needed to deal with such roads and that the local authority should “lead the way” to call on these communities to get involved.
