Cllr Burke calls on Mayo people to shop local

The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Michael Burke, has asked that people in the county “shop local” and “think local” this Christmas.

The Fine Gael councillor made his appeal at the Claremorris Electoral Area meeting on Wednesday where he urged that “local people need to protect their own community”. Cllr Burke said that the country and county are in “dire straights” at the moment and that local businesses are “really struggling”.

“We are at a serious crossroads” economically as we have been brought here “on a high jinx by drunken sailors”.

All councillors backed the need to shop local, and to assist in this there will be free parking in car parks in Ballinrobe and Claremorris in the run up to Christmas.
