Podiatry service for Mayo patients

A full time chiropodist for Mayo is to be appointed by the HSE to provide clinics around the county, Deputy Beverley Flynn has confirmed.

Dep Flynn said that a number of sessional chiropodists will also be employed to further enhance the service at various locations.

Dep Flynn raised the matter at last week's meeting of the Oireachtas Health Committee when she asked what were the plans of the HSE to provide podiatry services for diabetic sufferers in Mayo. She told the committee that the cost of treating diabetic foot disease could be reduced significantly by the provision of a foot screening programme and an effective podiatry service.

“I am pleased to announce this development, which will be a first step in putting in place a properly resourced, comprehensive service for diabetes patients,” Dep Flynn said. “The new improvements will mean that diabetes patients will be able to avail of annual foot screening.”

Deputy Flynn also said that the setting up of a new podiatry clinic on the grounds of Merlin Park Hospital in Galway will provide scope in the future to facilitate patients from Mayo.
