Mayo air quality satisfactory but fuel sources a concern

Air quality in County Mayo is generally good, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. However, the EPA is calling on people in the county to consider the types of fuel they burn in their fires.

“The EPA asks people in County Mayo to consider the impact that their choice of domestic heating fuel can have on the environment and air quality in their area,” said Dr Micháel Lehane, EPA programme manager. “An extension of the ban on the sale of bituminous coal to other areas would also further improve air quality.”

Dr Lehane said that improvements in air quality in can have a dramatic effect on health, quoting recent research showing that the bituminous coal ban in Dublin saves 350 lives a year.
