Mulherin welcomes repair of vandalised lights

Fine Gael Ballina town councillor and Mayo county councillor Michelle Mulherin has welcomed the news that the lights which were vandalised at Canalside walk in the town have been repaired.

“I am delighted that the long-time broken public lights which had been vandalised along the Canalside walkway have now been replaced and fixed and that the motion which I tabled to this effect for the last Ballina Town Council meeting has been satisfied by Ballina Town Council,” Cllr Mulherin said. “This work has been at a cost of over €15,000 for the council. It forms part of an overall plan by Ballina Town Council for the area and will ultimately link up with the pedestrian bridge and the new theatre and arts centre, and is part of the planned north south greenway which will run from Hollister to The Quay.

“The walkway is very important to locals living in the Foxford Road area who use it to get in and out of town by foot and bicycle, and is also enjoyed as an amenity for people from other parts of the town and tourists for a leisurely walk,” she added. “The repair of lights will greatly enhance the safety of the walkway, which for quite some time now (up to two years for some of the lights ) people were having to walk in darkness or avoid using it except in daylight hours. Also the fact that the new lights are more vandal resistant and energy efficient is to be welcomed. I am also requesting that the council install CCTV cameras along the walkway so that any culprit who might try to damage property in this way again will be caught, punished, and made to pay up for the damage.”
