Roads alert as temperatures set to plummet

Traditional cold Christmas weather is set to arrive this weekend as temperatures plummet and roads turn into mini ice rinks.

Met Éireann has issued weather alerts while AA Roadwatch is warning motorists to watch out for potentially dangerous road conditions in the coming days.

With road temperatures forecast to drop as low as -10°C at night time, the AA is especially urging caution early in the morning when frost, ice, and freezing fog are expected.

“Road temperatures are often far lower than the air temperature and often drivers may not realise the roads are still icy,” the AA warned. “On these dark mornings, roads often re-freeze around 7.30am or 8am, and the number of crashes usually increases. We advise drivers to take five minutes now, before the freeze arrives, to check that their tyres are in good condition and are properly inflated.”

The best advice therefore is to take extra care on the roads which are expected to be busier than ever from this weekend as Christmas shopping begins in earnest.
