The Mayo branch of Sinn Féin held a protest at the intervention of the IMF and EU into Ireland’s finances on Tuesday evening. The sparsely attended protest, held in Market Square, Castlebar, was addressed by both Mayo county councillor Gerry Murray and Castlebar town councillor Therese Ruane.
Cllr Murray stated the intervention of the IMF and the EU will not be a bailout for the Irish people, but a bail out for the banks, while ordinary Irish people will be left paying for it for generations. He said this deal will see savage cuts to services badly needed and used by people all over Ireland when they need them the most.
Cllr Ruane warned that the IMF does not care about the people in the countries it moves into and “will cut and cut” and see State and semi State assets sold off to private enterprises.
