A 23-year-old apprentice electrician was sentenced to five months in jail on Wednesday for being a “drug dealer”.
Garda Michael Moran outlined to Castlebar District Court that on October 27 2009, the home where Eoin O’Sullivan resided — 18 Whitehorse Lane, Turlough Road, Castlebar — was searched for drugs.
Twelve cut pieces of cannabis were found, as was a weighing scales and small deal bags. The estimated street value of the drugs found was €546.53.
Rory O’Connor, defending solicitor for O’Sullivan, said that the young man had left home and had fallen in with a bad crowd.
The defendant was a user of drugs and had intended to sell cannabis as he needed money for his car.
Since the detection, O’Sullivan has returned home to reside with his parents in Carnacon and has sought medical advice and counselling. The defendant has also undergone urine analysis to prove that he is not using drugs any more. The defendant has no previous convictions.
Judge John Coughlan said that O’Sullivan “is a drug dealer” and “is supporting drug gangs” and the judge sentenced him to prison.
Recognisance was fixed and by the end of court proceedings independent surety was approved.
