A Polish national was sentenced to six months in jail this week after he was detected driving while disqualified on three dates this year, even though he was disqualified from driving in January of 2010.
Michal Woranko, 3 Carrowbeg, Newport Road, Castlebar, was first stopped driving by Garda Hugh O’Donnell on March 13, where €4 worth of cannabis was found on his possession. Garda O’Donnell was then made aware that the defendant was disqualified from driving and he rang Woranko on March 23 and explained this to him. The defendant said that he would never drive again. However on the following day, the defendant was again observed driving by Garda O’Donnell.
On August 24, Garda Shane O’Brien also stopped the defendant who was driving. Woranko had no insurance for any of these dates.
The 26-year-old man works as a mechanic in Castlebar.
Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Woranko a total of €4,650 for driving while disqualified, possession of cannabis, for not having insurance, and for not having a driving licence. Woranko was disqualified from driving for a total of five years and sentenced to a total of six months in prison. Recognisances were fixed.
