Cór Mhaigh Eo (the Mayo county choir ) is delighted to announce a return to its busy rehearsal schedule following an exciting break this summer spent in the Spanish pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostella, in the northwest of the country.
The choir spent five days in the city in July, and performed a number of successful concerts under the direction of Dr Brian Lennon, returning with many wonderful memories.
One took place in the old council chamber of the university, a magnificent room adorned with carved paneling and baroque ceiling frescoes, where the choir sang a full programme including works by Monteverdi, Scarlatti, and Rachmaninov, which was very well received by the large audience present. Special mention must also be made here of the wonderful Irish dancing performed by Deirdre and Catherine Joyce, aged eight and six, and Caoimhe and Hazel Hopkinson, aged 13 and 9.
Cór Mhaigh Eo were also privileged to sing at the midday Mass for pilgrims recently arrived in the city. The cathedral was full, and the excellent acoustics contributed to an awe inspiring and moving experience for the singers.
The next important engagement for the choir is as part of a concert with poet Paul Durcan, which will take place in Holy Trinity Church, Westport, on Saturday November 13 next at 8.30pm, as part of the Rolling Sun Festival. Also watch out for concerts and recitals in the runup to Christmas.
