The Fianna Fáil/Green Government has spent almost €70 million in just two years on employing agency staff in 12 Government departments, according to Fine Gael Mayo Deputy John O’Mahony.
Deputy O’Mahony tabled Parliamentary Questions to all departments, with the responses showing that 4,268 agency staff were hired in 12 departments at huge cost to the taxpayer in 2008 and 2009.
“The Fianna Fáil/Green Government has an army of civil servants and it makes little sense to spend large amounts on external staff. Yet, as figures I received from 12 Government departments show, in just two years €68,615,432 was spent on external and agency staff. This is money the State and the Government doesn’t have,” said Dep O’Mahony.
