Breast check screening for older women

Dear Editor

Re: Ms Beverly Flynn TD.

It is with a very jaundiced eye that I regard Beverly Flynn's backing of a recent call by the Irish Cancer Society. So the Breast Check screening services are to be extended to the women in the age group 65-69. Ms Flynn refers to us as “the next age cohort who according to the society, are at high risk of the disease” (Mayo Advertiser, Oct 29 ).

Should we apply the stark analogy “whistling past the graveyard” to our chances of seeing this service rolled out any time soon? Don't bother hiding behind the tired and worn excuses 'fiscal constraints' or when 'funding is available'! The policies of Fianna Fail have created our present economic wasteland. Don't get me started on the so-called cancer centre of excellence in Galway which turned away 11 cancer patients last week, because of bed closures! But the day of reckoning is fast approaching when your party will be cast into total obscurity.

Sincerely,

Josephine Conway, Carramore, Shrule, Co Mayo.
