Man who acted like a child before court

A man who acted “like a five-year-old boy” was before Castlebar District Court this week on a public order charge.

Garda Caoimhe Walsh observed Shane Munnelly, Ballinglough, Snugboro, Castlebar, jump onto the back of a flat bed trailer which was being towed by a Jeep on Bridge Street, Castlebar. The incident occurred at 7.05pm on July 18 — the Connacht final day — where Garda Walsh was assisting traffic through the town.

After Munnelly jumped onto the back of the trailer he signalled to the crowd and then jumped off again. Garda Walsh said the defendant was intoxicated.

Aidan Crowley, solicitor for the defendant, said the section four intoxicated charge was not correct in this case as Munnelly was not “legless” on that day, and was far from intoxicated as he was able to jump up and back down from the trailer without stumbling.

Judge Mary Devins dismissed the charge and said that the accused was not intoxicated but did on that night “act like a five-year-old boy”.
