It all seems so familiar, Carnacon on the cusp of an All Ireland final and while the central Mayo club have been the undisputed Queens of Mayo football for what seems like nigh on forever, they still have the hunger to drive for success year after year. That hunger has once again brought them to the final four in the country and a place in the All Ireland final up for grabs, standing in their way are Laois and Leinster champions Timahoe.
Having had to travel to the home of Roscommon champions St Brigid’s in the Connacht final it is back on the road they must go this Sunday to take on Timahoe in their own patch. Not that Carnacon will have anything to fear as they showed in the Connacht final where they ripped apart St Brigid’s on a scoreline of 6-14 to 1-5. While no one has ever doubted the quality that exists in the Carnacon team, scoring 6-14 in a provincial final will make everybody take notice. The tormentor in chief on the Carnacon side that day was Cora Staunton who finished off her hour’s work with 3-12 to her name. While most teams would mark out a player who bagged 3-12 in her last game for special attention, it will be nothing new for Staunton who has been getting special attention from other sides for years now and very rarely has any side been able to stifle her.
Carnacon’s opponents on Sunday saw off Dublin champions Ballyboden St Enda’s in the Leinster final a few weeks back, and they will present a tough challenge for Carnacon, but Jimmy Corbett and Beatrice Casey’s team look to be peaking at just the right time to have what it takes to see off the Leinster champions and book their place in the All Ireland final.
