Cineclub na nÓg
Cineclub na nÓg is a junior film club, for children aged five to 12, which aims to foster a sense of film appreciation among children in an educational and fun way. They will enjoy the film in the state-of-the-art auditorium and, afterwards, the children will talk about the film with the facilitators – chat about what happened, discuss their favourite characters and their least favourite personalities, draw pictures based on the film etc. This fully supervised bilingual club is a great way to encourage the children to express themselves as Gaeilge and as Bearla outside school, in a fun, informal, environment. Depending on the success of Cineclub na nÓg (which may run twice a month ), Áras Inis Gluaire would like to establish an Irish language Club Óige, to cover all aspects of speaking and learning Irish in a fun way. The first Cineclub na nÓg gathering will take place on Saturday, November 6, at 1pm. Children must be picked up at 3.30pm sharp. Admission is €10 per child. Family discount of 15 per cent applies. Exhibition: In an attempt to find the right words...
In an attempt to find the right words... is a new permanent public art installation by artist James Hayes in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, Co. Mayo. The installation consists of some 2,000 bronze cast pencils which appear to have been launched (dart-like ) onto the wall. Earlier in the year there was an open invitation to members of the public who wanted their own special pencil, which had some significance to them, to donate it to be cast in bronze and included in the final artwork. There was a great response, with many local people donating pencils, also several writers, artists and poets from across the country donated their pencils too. An exhibition documenting the process of creating the artwork, and the stories behind some of the donated pencils, will be exhibited in the gallery space of Áras Inis Gluaire until November 10.
Exhibition: A Place in Time
An exhibition of paintings by Mary Lavelle-Burke, titled A Place in Time will be launched in Áras Inis Gluaire on November 13, at 4pm. The exhibition will be officially opened by John McHugh, manager of Custom House Studios in Westport. Mary Lavelle-Burke graduated with a degree in fine art and design from GMIT in 2007 and she lives and works on Achill Island. She has participated in several group exhibitions since 2006 throughout Ireland and abroad. Mary’s work is included in public and private collections in many countries, including the collection of Mayo County Council and National University Hospital Galway. The atmosphere and environment of Achill Island - and the everyday life spent observing and experiencing the landscape and the sea, specifically the shoreline, rocks and pools of Dooega Bay - has inspired the body of works in A Place in Time – her first solo exhibition.
