Athletics

The Mayo AC ladies’ team who were representing Ireland at the European Women’s Interclub Road Race championships in Portugal last weekend just missed out on claiming a medal when they came fourth overall. Team member Catherine Conway came home in ninth place overall in a time of 55.22, with Mary Gleeson only three places further back in 12th place in a time of 56.57. Colette Tuohy finished the race in 14th place in a time of 58.13, with Cathy Connolly coming home in a time of 63.09 and Chris Gallagher in a time of 64.32.

Barrett claims Terry Fox run win

The seventh race of the Mayo AC (Ballina Terry Fox Run ) league was held in Ballina recently. The race was run in ideal conditions under the direction of Michael Rice and his army of volunteers. Roger Barrett (Ballina AC ) continued his winning ways of recent weeks with a strong performance over the four mile course securing victory in a time of 20:39. That represents an average pace of 5:10 per mile over the undulating course. Barrett opened a gap of eight seconds on Mayo AC's John Byrne in the last half mile or so with both athletes battling it out until then.

Michael Canty also of Ballina AC secured his first podium finish in a Mayo AC league and can be justifiably delighted with his performance. This season has been one of remarkable consistency for Canty who has paced all his league races to perfection.

Murphy posts personal best in Amsterdam marathon

Ballina AC’s Alan Murphy produced a personal best time of 3:40:13 in the Amsterdam marathon last weekend. All his friends in the club are delighted with his performance as the Belfast marathon ended in disappointment for him due to illness prior to that race. It was a different story in The Netherlands this weekend as he stormed to his fastest time yet. Murphy is the race director of the highly successful River Moy half marathon and this is an event which is destined to grow in popularity.
