Osteoporosis meeting in Westport

In association with the Irish Osteoporosis Society and Mayo General Hospital, a public meeting is being organised on osteoporosis to be held in the Castlecourt Hotel on Tuesday October 26 at 7.30pm.

At present it is estimated that 300,000 people in Ireland have osteoporosis. “This is probably the most pressing bone health issue which faces our society,” said Derek Bennett, chairman of Mayo Orthopaedic Unit. “It is a condition which is relatively simple to diagnose and treat, and as with many conditions, prevention is far more important and far easier than treatment. The fractures which result from untreated osteoporosis can be extremely serious and disabling. I would advocate that everyone who is concerned about osteoporosis should talk to their GP and undergo a simple DEXA scan for osteoporosis.”

Professor Moira O’Brien, the country’s foremost expert on osteoporosis and president of the Irish Osteoporosis Society, will attend the meeting. Other speakers will be Derek Bennett; Dr Richard Tobin, who runs the DEXA scanning unit in Castlebar; and Dr Tom Lee, consultant in elderly medicine in Mayo General Hospital. The meeting will be chaired by Charles Meehan, general manager of Mayo General Hospital.
