New housing units unveiled in Ballina

The first phase of completed housing units in St Patrick’s Estate regeneration project, Ballina, County Mayo, were officially unveiled today (Friday October 22 ) at a launch in Hotel Ballina by Minister for Housing Michael Finneran.

St Patrick’s Estate was developed as a local authority housing estate 40 years ago and, over recent decades, fell into disrepair. It has experienced problems associated with disadvantage, including anti-social behaviour.

The regeneration of St Patrick’s Estate, which has been supported by Ballina Town Council and managed by the not-for-profit housing association Clúid, has been ongoing since 2006. The first phase of rebuilding the estate has now been completed with 53 housing units in place.

“The regeneration of St Patrick’s Estate is vital in getting the word out to town and county councils that regeneration is not just for big cities,” said Brian O’Gorman, chief executive of Clúid. “It can have a significant return for smaller towns too.”

He added that the quality of the housing now available at St Patrick’s Estate is a testament to the local residents and Ballina Town Council who exercised great patience and commitment in bringing about the completion of the first phase in the regeneration project.
