Death of Mayo man leads to census

The death of a man from Mayo in 2008, whose body was not discovered in his New York home for a week, has led to a census of elderly Irish people in the New York borough of Queens being launched.

The census, which has been called the Gallagher Initiative, after the name of the deceased Tony Gallagher, will give an analysis of emigration and current conditions of some 400 elderly people who have agreed to take part.
