Twelve week delay in vetting process too long – O’Mahony

Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony has been informed by the Minister for Justice and Law Reform, Dermot Ahern, that an additional 10 people have been recruited to the Garda Central Vetting Unit on a temporary basis to deal with the high volume of applications from people seeking vetting clearance that allows them take up employment.

However Deputy O’Mahony has also learned that the average processing time for vetting applications received by the GCVU is in the region of 10 to 12 weeks.

Deputy O’Mahony has welcomed the employment of the extra 10 people but is still concerned that the waiting time is too long.

The Garda Central Vetting Unit (GCVU ) provides employment vetting for a large number of organisations in Ireland registered with the Gardaí for this purpose and which employ people in a full-time, part-time, voluntary, or training capacity to positions where they would have substantial, unsupervised, access to children and/or vulnerable adults. At present, there are approximately 60,000 vetting applications in the course of being processed.

Registered organisations have been advised to take account of delays in their recruitment and selection process.
