Mayo County Council pay tribute to drowning victims

The elected members of Mayo County Council paid tribute this week to the two victims of the drowning tragedy off Inishboffin. As a mark of respect to the late Ger Feeney and Donal McEllin, the council adjourned their monthly meeting at 5pm last Monday.

County Manger Peter Hynes passed on his sympathies and that of all council staff, and to Ger Feeney’s wife Kathleen who was a former employee of Mayo County Council. The members of the council also paid tribute to three other people who lost their lives in tragic circumstances over the past week, Thomas Tierney, Kilmaine, Keith Donnellan, Newport and Edmond Heneghan, Tourmakeady.

Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony, also described the deaths of Ger Feeney and Donal McEllin as a tragic loss both for their families and the community at large.

“This is such an awful tragedy and one that has united the county in grief. May their souls rest in peace,” said Deputy O’Mahony.

Sympathies were also extended to the families of Ger Feeney and Donal McEllin at Westport Electoral Area committee meeting this week.

Chair Councillor Austin Francis O’Malley also sympathised with the Gavin family from the Louisburgh area, who also suffered a tragic loss last week after Peter Gavin’s body was discovered in the Bunowen River.
