Mayo Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for State, Dara Calleary has reported that some 100,000 documents have been analysed as part of the ongoing Anglo Irish Bank investigation. Dep Calleary received details of the ongoing extensive Garda enquiry into Anglo Irish Bank after questioning Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern on the issue in the Dáil recently.
“More than 350 people have been interviewed and search warrants, courts orders, and arrests have been made,” Dep Calleary reported. “We are told that enquiries are also taking place outside the State.
“Major manpower has been allocated to the investigation including 27 gardaí and 16 officers of the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforce [ODCE]. The Director of Public Prosecutions [DPP] has also retained two senior and one junior counsel to advise the investigators. It is clear that this investigation is substantial and is being taken very seriously.
“I share in the public sense of frustration that no-one has been brought before the courts yet but there is no easy way of dealing with these matters,” Minister Calleary added. “Only by carrying out a systemic and forensic investigation, will we be guaranteed an effective outcome. As the Minister for Justice pointed out yesterday, this is the most complex investigation of its kind in the history of the State comprising no less than 10 strands.
“While the process is painstakingly detailed, the huge work undertaken to date is extremely encouraging. It is clear that uncovering the truth in relation to the reprehensible events at Anglo remains a top priority for the Gardaí, the ODCE, and the Government,” Minister Calleary concluded.
