The enhancement and refurbishment of Rosmoney Pier, from funds raised by the sailing club, was discussed at the Westport Electoral Area meeting on Monday last.
Following a tragedy off Rosmoney in 2009, the sailing club approached the council with an idea to place pontoons off the existing pier for an estimated cost of €148,000 plus VAT. The club is willing to raise this finance, as long as the council would assist it in the application for a foreshore licence.
A foreshore application was prepared and lodged this year, however there were “grave reservations” about the proposal and council consultants then examined the proposal. The cost was deemed to in fact be more than €300,000, or €650,000 for a more developed facility.
The director of services, Joe Beirne, said that it would be advisable at the next meeting to have a cost report circulated in order to facilitate further discussion.
