Ban for driver stopped with one headlight

A Tooreen man was disqualified from driving for three years and given a three-year driving ban this week in Ballyhaunis District Court after he pleaded guilty to drunk driving.

Garda Alan Ryan told the court that on November 11 2009 he was on patrol in the patrol car at 4.08am when he met a car coming in the opposite direction to him which had only one headlight. He turned his car and followed the other car and noticed that it was driving erratically.

At Hazel Hills, Ballyhaunis he stopped the car which was being driven by Martin Waldron of Crossord, Tooreen, Co Mayo and spoke to him. He arrested him for drunk driving and brought him to Claremorris Garda Station. Waldron gave a blood sample which returned a reading of 163mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. Judge Devins imposed the fine and the ban which will not come into effect until December 15.
