Bad weekend for Mayo sides

Castlebar lose unbeaten record

Castlebar wound up on the end of a defeat for the first time this season on the road last weekend. Rory Casey’s side made the trip to the Sportsground looking to make it three wins out of three against Our Ladies’ Boys Club, but the Galway side were in no mood to go down this time.

The Galway side went in at the break leading 5-0 thanks to a Dave Prior touchdown, Castlebar came close through a penalty attempt from Robbie Cusack but his effort drifted wide. Castlebar got back on track in the second half when Fintan Casey chased down a Robbie Cusack kick ahead to cross the line. However the Galway city side were able to get back into the game and two more tries from Prior pushed them ten points ahead and sealed the win. Castlebar will be looking to put things right this weekend when they host Sligo at home in Cloondesh.

Ballina go down by six in Tuam

Ballina keep coming close but not close enough. Last weekend they went to Tuam looking to pick up a win, but for the third week in a row they went down in a close contest. The north Mayo side went in at half time 6-3 down with Tuam leading in the penalty kick contest thanks to two scores from Killian McDonnagh against Ballina’s one from Andy Moynihan.

The second half started extremely brightly for Ballina when they crossed the line twice in quick succession through centre pairing Michael Clarke and Eoin McDaid. However, the missed conversion attempts from both scores proved costly at the end of the contest. Ballina weren’t able to keep their momentum up and the home side pushed back hard against them and tries from Stephen Kavanagh and Rory Kavanagh along with a late placed kick sealed the win. Despite going down for the third week in a row Ballina did head back home with a losing bonus point, which could become important as the season progresses. This weekend they will be making the trip to Galway again, this time to Headford to take on a Corrib side who themselves tasted defeat at the hands of Corinthians last week.

Two defeats on the trot for Westport

Westport tasted defeat for the second time in as many rounds of the junior league last time out, but their late comeback to within three points will have given them plenty of encouragement for their upcoming clash with Corinthians. Westport hung in with Galwegians in the first half to only to trail 6-5 thanks to Kevin Corcoran’s try. However the opening period of the second half saw the Galway side hit three unanswered tries all of which were converted to leave the score 27-5 in favour of the home side.

But Westport weren’t done yet and in the final 20 minutes Lee Keegan and Lyndon Jones hit two quick tries, before a late David Keane try secured the four-try bonus point and cut the gap to three points at the end. This weekend Westport will host Corinthians in Carrowholly and will be going all out to make sure it’s not three defeats out of three for the Bulls.
