Anxiety is a general term for several disorders that cause nervousness, fear, apprehension, and worry. These disorders affect how we feel and behave and they can manifest real physical symptoms. Mild anxiety is vague and unsettling, while severe anxiety can be extremely debilitating, having a serious impact on daily life.

People often experience a general state of worry or fear before confronting something challenging such as a test or interview. These feelings are easily justified and considered normal.

When should I be concerned?

Anxiety is considered a problem when symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to sleep or otherwise function. Generally speaking, anxiety occurs when reaction is out of proportion with what might be normally expected in a situation.

Does stress cause anxiety?

A panic attack is a fight or flight response of the body, usually reacting to an overload of stress and anxiety. In a panic attack, a person is unable to cope with extreme cases of stress and anxiety. The overwhelming anxiety causes a heavier display of symptoms associated with stress and anxiety. Anxiety and stress, when at a high level, can cause a panic attack.

What are anxiety disorders?

An anxiety disorder is any mental disorder characterised by a significant amount of anxiety. Anxiety disorders include phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, separation anxiety disorder, and generalised anxiety disorder. Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorder and can often trigger a panic attack. An anxiety disorder can be a very real threat to an individual’s ability to function.
