Fine Gael Castlebar town councillor Noreen Heston has expressed her concern that no bicycle lane exists on the Moneen Road in Castlebar.
“This is an extremely busy road with roughly 1,600 students using it on a daily basis during school times,” Cllr Heston said. “It is one of the main access routes for a total of four schools; two of which are primary-level schools and the remaining two being secondary-level schools. The use of bicycle lanes by students wishing to travel to school would seriously reduce traffic in the area at peak times while ensuring the safety of cyclists.”
Cllr Heston added that she had been advised by the town manager that these matters will be discussed in the near future.
“The installation of a pedestrian crossing on Lower Charles Street would make a substantial difference to elderly residents wanting to get into town or to the local shop. It is a very busy area with many pedestrians needing to cross the road; four roads converge all within the same area and three exist on a mini-roundabout. However, I welcome that a new bicycle lane has been included in the design of the new riverside walk, and while I have campaigned for improvements on the Fortfield and Springfield Road which have resulted in some resurfacing and new footpath works, further improvements still remain to be done.”
