Smarter Travel €50 million prize results this month

Westport will find out this month whether it has been successful in the National Smarter Travel Competition — the results were initially expected in June. The town is competing for funding of up to €50 million over five years which could potentially transform Westport into a world class Smarter Travel Town.

Westport town councillor Myles Staunton said that the council has been informed this week by the Department of Transport that the results of the Smarter Travel Competition will not be announced before mid-October 2010.

Cllr Staunton hoped that the results would be received “sooner rather than later” as “there has been a significant momentum between all the various organisations in the town including the schools and businesses”.

“Westport has already seen a significant increase in the use of sustainable transport such as walking and cycling and if selected, the funding will represent a considerable investment and opportunity in respect of physical infrastructure and promotion of Westport both nationally and internationally,” the Fine Gael councillor said.
