The issue of whether Mayo County Council is liable for anyone who is injured while visiting graveyards was clarified at the local Swinford Electoral Area committee meeting which took place this week.
Councillor Eugene Lavin, who was very concerned about the matter, asked about the question of liability.
Paddy Mahon, the director of services, said that it is up to the individual plot owners, who buy a plot from the council, to look after their plots and they would be liable if someone was injured. However Mr Mahon also said that a duty of care is required from anyone who visits graveyards.
