Deputy Michael Ring, Fine Gael spokesperson for social protection, has extended his thanks to Mayo County Council for agreeing to support the residents of Glencastle, Belmullet, by providing assistance to control wild rhubarb in the area.
The council has agreed to provide grant assistance up to €300 towards the cost of purchasing herbicide to fight against the spread of wild rhubarb — an alien invasive plant which has damaging effects on the countryside — in the Glencastle area.
Last week Deputy Ring met with a deputation from the Glencastle area concerned about the spreading of the weed. Local residents have indicated they will play their part in the eradication of the invasive plant. Mayo County Council has now agreed to make up to €300 available for groups wishing to carry out Gunnera control projects in 2010.
