Jim Higgins, Fine Gael MEP for Ireland North West, is the author of an important parliamentary declaration which calls on the European Commission to limit industrially produced trans fats acids in all food to no more than two per cent.
“Industrially produced TFAs are a foreign entity to the human body, one which does not have a purpose and cannot be broken down by the body and so stays there clogging arteries,” the MEP said. TFAs are added to foods to increase their shelf life.
“The importance of this initiative can be seen by the manner in which it has been welcomed by my fellow MEPs. The declaration has met with approval from MEPs from all member states and political groups.”
