Van drove off from accident in Turlough

A bench warrant was issued at Castlebar District Court this week for an English resident who was allegedly involved in a hit and run in Castlebar.

Garda Fergal O’Gara received a call on September 9 at 9.30pm about a traffic accident which occurred at Turlough.

Aine Roche said that her vehicle was struck by a van which left the scene. Garda O’Gara travelled up the road from the incident and observed John Stacey, 11 Thrift Road, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, UK, urinating outside a van, which had crashed into a hedge. Another male, who was in the van with Stacey, was observed down the road.

Stacey was arrested for being intoxicated and was later re-arrested after Ms Roche identified him as the driver of the van and identified him in an ID parade. As Ms Roche was not in court, Judge Mary Devins issued a bench warrant for the defendant, who is believed to have left the jurisdiction.
