Mother disqualified for allowing child to stand in back of car

A mother who allowed her young child to be unrestrained in her car was disqualified for one year at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.

On February 22 2010 at 5.25pm, Garda Patrick Forde stopped a car driven by Maura Prendergast, 27 Carramore Drive, Knock, as he observed a child of approximately four years of age standing in the rear. A fixed charge notice was issued, but was not paid.

The garda said in court that there were two other children sitting in the rear of the car in one seat, with no seatbelt on.

Prendergast, who has no previous convictions, was not in court.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined her €300 and disqualified her from driving for one year.
