Work on the new library and arts centre in Swinford is to commence in the coming weeks, news which was greatly welcomed at the Swinford Electoral Area meeting on Tuesday.
Director of services for the area Paddy Mahon outlined that work will commence on the development in October.
The site for the library was acquired in 2001/2002 and the cost for the entire completion will be €1.8 million. The Department of Environment has confirmed that it will provide €500,000, with the rest of the funding to come from local area funding, which will have to be budgeted for over the next 15 to 20 years.
Chairman of the committee Councillor Joe Mellett said it was “great news” as it “will provide employment which is essential in the area”. Cllr Eugene Lavin said it was “outstanding news”, while Cllr Murray also welcomed the “great news”.
