The driver of a car who turned away from a Garda checkpoint, but was later stopped by gardaí, had a bench warrant issued for his arrest at Wednesday’s sitting of Castlebar District Court.
On March 21 at 3.45pm, Sergeant Declan Casey stopped a car which was driven by Martin Walsh, Kilrush, Hollymount, in the Balla area. The sergeant had earlier observed the defendant drive away from a checkpoint in Brize, Claremorris.
Walsh had no documentation for the car and the car was not taxed since 2004. The defendant was not in court.
As the defendant’s previous convictions were listed in court, it transpired that the defendant was in fact disqualified from driving when he was stopped.
Judge Mary Devins said that this “is more serious than it first appears” and she issued a bench warrant before sentencing.
