Jim Higgins MEP for Ireland North West welcomed some 200 Special Olympians to the European Parliament in Brussels this week where the Special Olympics Torch Run finished. The run passed through nine different countries, starting on September 5 last.
“It is such an honour for me to have been able to facilitate today's event at the European Parliament,” Mr Higgins said. “It is heart-warming to see so many dedicated athletes here at the heart of Europe, as they prepare for the games in Warsaw this weekend.”
A total of 1,600 athletes will take part in the Special Olympics Games in Warsaw from September 18 to 24.
“I wish each and every athlete the best of luck as they take part in the Special Olympics. They are truly an inspiration to us all,” Mr Higgins added.
Mr Higgins also paid tribute to Mary Davis, a Mayo woman and CEO of Special Olympics, for “the Trojan work she has been doing to organise the event”.
