Ellison Street will reopen to two way traffic

Fears by a number of traders in the Ellison Street area of Castlebar, that the street would become a one way street once the rejuvenation works in the town were completed, were allayed at a meeting of Castlebar Town Council this week.

Independent councillor Frank Durcan raised the issue stating: “I’ve received a number of letters from the traders on Ellison Street, who are not at all happy,” he said. “Is there a hidden agenda in this council to close that street off to two way traffic?”

Town Manager Seamus Granahan said there was no such plan. “I have written back to those traders myself and there is no plan at all like that”. He added, “We hope to have the street open again to two way traffic soon. It will be tight on the street, but it always has been on Ellison Street. But we are looking at trying to ban HGVs from turning right there, and directing them down around by the roundabout at Tesco.”

Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said the manager should think of going further in relation to HGVs, and ban them completely from the town centre after 11am.

Mr Granahan also confirmed that the council was looking at improving the roundabout at Tesco and making it bigger, but that project would not happen until after the Main Street project has been finished.
