Castlebar Cycling Club is gearing up for its two day charity sponsored cycle, starting today, Friday September 17, through to tomorrow Saturday September 18, in support of Western Care Association services throughout Mayo.
This is the eighth year that Castlebar Cycling Club has organised a charity cycle, having raised in excess of €110,000 for Western Care and the CARI Foundation over the past seven years. The cycle will go from Castlebar to Roscommon via Charlestown, and return via Ballyhaunis and Kiltimagh to arrive in Market Square at 3pm approximately on Saturday. It is anticipated that about 40 club members will participate in the event; each cyclist is raising funds through sponsorship cards, and bucket collections will be held in towns along the route on both days.
The club has more than 100 members at all levels and ages from the beginner to the experienced competitive racing cyclist. The club participates in all types of cycling events including leisure cycling tours, challenging cycling tours, leisure cycling races, and competitive cycling races. This year the club entered the FBD Insurance RÁS for the second time and the five man team acquitted themselves admirably over the gruelling eight day Circuit of Ireland race.
Western Care Association (www.westerncare.com ) exists to empower people with a wide range of learning and associated disabilities in County Mayo to live full and satisfied lives as equal citizens. Castlebar brings home All Ireland gold
Castlebar cycling club was well represented with 17 young cyclists taking part in the All Ireland youth road race championships in Coalisland, Co Tyrone. The team did extremely well over the two days with Paul McDonagh taking sixth in the u16 time trial, Karl Benson took fourth in the u13 road race, and the highlight of the weekend came on Sunday with Liam Corcoran’s win in the u15 road race. The race ended in a bunch sprint with Liam crossing the line in first place. Corcoran’s win would not have been possible without the help of his team mates Fintan Murphy and Paul Murray.
On the senior men’s racing front Castlebar CC had three cyclists at the Charleville two day (two road races and a time trial ) last weekend, Chris Troy, Ciaran Clarke, and Rory Conroy, all completed the race with Troy third in the time trial and sixth overall in the general classification.
