Conviction and fine for man who failed to tell gardaí his name

A Claremorris man who failed to give his name to gardaí when he was arrested was fined a total of €350 in Ballyhaunis District Court this week.

Enda Coyne, Aghareville, Claremorris, who did not appear in court, was convicted in his absence. Garda Alan Ryan told the court he was on duty on Main Street, Ballyhaunis, at 2.30am on July 17 2010, where he saw two men interfering with a car. He went over and spoke to the men, one of whom was Enda Coyne. He said Coyne was highly intoxicated at the time.

Coyne refused to give Garda Ryan his name and was arrested and brought to the Garda station where, after being searched, a passport was found on him which allowed Garda Ryan to establish his identity.

For being intoxicated in a public place Coyne was convicted and fined €100, and for failing to give his name and address when demanded by the gardaí he was convicted and fined €250.
