Roundford man Martin Heneghan scooped the Irish title in the Green Isle Hotel in Dublin defeating Kilkenny’s David Coyne in the final on Saturday August 28. Martin saw off the Leinster man 4-0 in the final with some very good play. It was almost an all Mayo final with Martin defeating fellow Roundford player Michael Connelly, 4-3, in the semi-final in a competition which featured the 50 top players in the country. Heneghan has now qualified to take part in the PDC Unicorn World u21 championship which will take place in Barnsley, England, in November.
Another Mayo man who came close to national success recently was Padraic Hestor from Newport who made it all the way to the last 16 of the Tom Kirby memorial matchplay competition. With more than 160 of the best darts players from Ireland taking part it was a huge achievement for the Newport man.
