Attention turns to the junior ranks this weekend

Following the quarter finals in the senior and the intermediate championships last weekend, attention will turn to the junior championship in the county this weekend. The action will get under way on Saturday with the meeting of Ardnaree and Parke in McHale Park at 5pm. The north Mayo men made it as far as the final last season, going down by two points in the final to Kiltimagh. En route to the final they knocked out their opponents in the semi final stage. The west Mayo men will be looking for revenge, after nearly making the break through to senior football a couple of years ago, before tumbling down to the junior grade they have been pushing hard to make it back up to the intermediate ranks.

The second quarter final sees The Neale and Lahardane go to toe to toe at 6.30pm in McHale Park. The south Mayo men made it as far as the final in 2008 before being beaten by Killala and should go into the game as favourites against the west Mayo men.

The first quarter final on Sunday pits Louisburgh who were playing senior football a couple of years ago against Balina Stephenites B side in Castlebar at 12pm on Sunday. The Ballina B side will be a tough opposition for the seasiders, but Louisburgh will be a hard side to beat for them. The final quarter final is a local derby, when Islandeady and Castlebar Mitchels B square off in Breaffy. Islandeady have been knocking at the door trying to make a break through for a couple of years and with a large number of players getting action in the senior championship this year as part of the West Mayo team they will fancy their chances against the second string from Castlebar.

The draw for the semi final stages of the senior, intermediate, and junior championship has been pencilled in for Sunday week, September 12. Ballintubber, Castlebar Mitchels, Shrule-Glenncorrib, and Knockmore will all be in the hat for the senior draw, while Burrishoole, Tourmakeady, Belmullet, and Kiltimagh will be in the draw for the intermediate championship.
