The weekend Stableford competition sponsored by Fragile, Castlebar, was won by Bob Leggett who finished with a score of 39. Don Dillon came home in second place on 37 with Joe Monaghan finishing in third scoring 36. The ladies’ competition was won by Mary Jo Cannon who scored 37, Mary Brett came home in second with a score of 36. Marie Flanagan was the third place finisher in the competition on a score of 35. The youths’ section was won by Marissa Brett. Don Dillon who came home in second place in the men’s competition also hit a hole in one on the 12th.
The draw for the Broderick Cup is currently up on the clubhouse notice board, and an outing to Mulranny Golf Club has been organised for Saturday September 25, those interested should give their name to Bob Leggett on 087 7564573 as soon as possible.
Ballina
The President’s Prize (Anthony Kilcullen ) was played last Sunday and saw a unique finish with a father and son pairing battling it out for the prize. Bernie Lawrence won out with a score of 65 nett, with Kenneth Lawrence coming home second with a score of 67 nett. Patrick McGoldrick finished third with Padraic Clancy fourth, and the gross prize was claimed by Jonathan Kelly. The category one prize was won by James Hogan, category two by Michael Forde, and Des Cronin claimed the category three win. The veterans’ prize was won by Joe Cahill, with John Horgan taking the front nine prize and Paul Cawley the back nine prize.
Last weekend the club launched a new Saturday competition called super Saturday. Played off blue tees and over 12 holes on a Stableford basis, this proved to be a really tough challenge for the competitors. With the tees placed in unique positions, considerable length was added to the course and it provided some interesting holes on the day. The winner of this competition was Darren Flaherty with a score of 49 nett. The club is introducing a non competitive membership from September to the end of December for just €100. This is a great opportunity for anyone thinking of getting into golf or indeed for former members who have let their membership lapse and might be keen to get back out on the course. The club fund raising classic takes place on September 10, 11, and 12. The entry fee is €100 per team and re-entry is just €40 per team over the weekend. This is an open competition and visitors are welcome. Details and time sheet information can be had from the club office.
Ballyhaunis
The Homecare Medical Products sponsored stroke play competition was won by Kevin Keenan who scored 66, John Burke came home in second place on 69, Liam Rochford took third also finishing on 69. The gross prize was won by Tom Moran. The ladies’ competition was won by Joan McGuire on a score of 71, Josie Folliard came second, with Nuala Fitzgerald third. The gross prize was claimed by Kung Fanning.
Castlebar ladies
The 18 hole weekend competition sponsored by Gifts Supreme was won by Mary McDonald, who scored 37pts over her round. Flavia Caffola came home in second place one point further back, and Teresa Kelly took third place. The gross prize was claimed by Deirdre Moylette. This weekend it is Lady President’s Prize and a good weekend’s golf is expected for all.
Claremorris
Last weekend’s competition which was sponsored by JJ Griffith was won by Darren Walsh with a score of 39 points, Jim Egan came home in second place after he scored 37 points. Martin O’Brien finished off the round with a score of 36 points to claim third place, and Joey McDonnell won the gross prize. The ladies’ competition was won by Chris Rushe with Emma Prenty taking second place.
Westport
Ronan Geraghty and Blane Lynch featured in the prizes at the Mayo boys’ open played in Carrowholly, last week. The organisers of the event were delighted with the turnout where Brendan Cafferkey from Belmullet took the top prize.
Joe Kelly continues at the top of the GOY table. There was no real change in the overall standings but Liam Halpin now finds himself less than 150 points outside the top five, following his gross win on Sunday last. A comprehensive overview of the points system for the final four events in the GOY competition is on view in the gents’ locker room.
The Carrowholly golf classic was played at Westport Golf Club last weekend. Teams are made up of one lady, one junior, a low handicap golfer, and another player. The format of the event is a scramble where a minimum of three drives of each player must be used. Adrian Thompson was delighted to accept the Paddy Golden memorial cup on behalf of his team players Laura Friel and Liam Gibbons. In excess of 45 golfers took part in the annual Liam Walsh Plate played on Friday last. With a magnificent score of 42 points, John Gavin was a very popular winner.
