Labour Party Cllr Harry Barrett has called on Ireland West Airport Knock to drop the development charge for passengers between the ages of 12 and 18.
“I am now calling on the management of Ireland West Airport Knock to drop the departure fee on children who are over the age of 12 years,” Cllr Barrett said. “Further developments can still take place without charging children, who are not wage earners, for the privilege of using an airport that is part funded by the State. I have travelled to similar airports in poorer parts of Europe, and this charge on children does not apply.”
Cllr Barrett said that he knows that the managment of the airport are doing a good job but he believes they could drop this particular charge. “The management of Ireland West Airport Knock has done a tremendous job making it Ireland’s fourth international airport with a major increase in the number of passengers using the facility,” he added. “The airport now serves more than 20 scheduled and charter destinations across Ireland, the UK, Europe, and beyond. However it has, and still receives, huge support from the taxpayer, which I am glad to see that it uses to great effect, and is a shining example of how the State can intervene to help a private venture.”
