Castlebar organisation wins Bord Gáis funding

Representatives and volunteers from the Castlebar Voluntary Social Services had plenty of reason to celebrate this week following the announcement that they were to receive €25,000 worth of funding from the Bord Gáis Energy Community Energy Fund.

The €100,000 community energy fund was set up to mark the company’s one millionth customer earlier this year, and 16 selected projects will now have their energy bills paid for in varying amounts ranging from €2,500 to €25,000 which will allow them to focus on developing the work they do to an even greater extent.

Castlebar Voluntary Social Services was selected as overall winner. The organisation has been providing drop in services at its premises in Castle Street as well as providing meals on wheels for the elderly and under privileged in the town and outlying district since 1973. In addition to paying its energy costs for the coming 12 months the Bord Gáis Community Energy Fund Award will allow the service to connect to the natural gas network, and in so doing reduce its overall energy bill and focus on its ambition to provide meals to 1,100 people weekly.
