Ireland West Airport Knock welcomes planning approval

Ireland West Airport Knock welcomes the recent decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant permission for the proposed development at the airport of car park extension, new entrance, and roundabout, fire station extension and advertising billboards. The granted application allows for necessary improvements as outlined in the airport’s Master Plan and, together with the recent terminal extension and airfield enhancement works, provides for increased capacity at the airport.

The original application had received planning permission in late 2008 from Mayo County Council and was appealed to An Bord Pleanála by a number of third parties.

A comprehensive environmental impact survey was subsequently carried out by RPS consultants on behalf of the airport and additional supporting information was provided to the Board on request.

“This decision by An Bord Pleanála further validates the policies and objectives for the airport which provides for the expansion of future infrastructure and capacity at the airport,” Joe Gilmore, managing director IWAK, said this week. “It provides the framework for future development within the context of the regional and national development plans and confirms the airport’s key role as an important infrastructure asset in providing both international access and enterprise regeneration to the broader region. The airport now has the necessary planning approvals to carry out the required expansion work to facilitate further traffic growth to over one million passengers annually when the funding becomes available. I would like to acknowledge the cooperation and support of Mayo County Council and also the other key stakeholders who contributed to the process.”
