A 62-year-old married father of three, who took cash from the wallet of woman, was convicted and fined for the “unsavoury incident”.
Castlebar District Court was told that on November 3 2009, a Ms Conlon reported to gardaí that €100 had been taken from her wallet which she had left unattended in the Tax Office after she ran outside to get her insurance details.
CCTV viewed showed that Michael Walsh, 13 The Cedars, Breaffy, removed the money and then handed the wallet to the woman as she returned inside.
Walsh admitted taking the money when interviewed. The man, who works as a groundsman at Celtic Park in Castlebar, has one previous conviction for larceny.
Judge Mary Devins said that this was “such a horrible incident” by this “light fingered man”. The judge said that Walsh’s children and employer will not be proud of his actions and she told Walsh that this “unsavoury incident will remain with you”. Judge Devins convicted and fined him €200. Walsh had earlier handed in €100 to be made payable to the injured party.
