As part of the national Famine commemoration, Mayo County Library has produced an exhibition of this tragic period of Irish history. The Great Famine was one of the defining periods of Irish history. It marked a watershed in the history of the country, causing a change so complete in the Irish social and economic fabric that the people’s sensibilities would never be the same again. The Famine in Mayo is an exhibition which provides a vivid portrait of the lives and deaths of the people as recorded by witnesses in books, newspapers and official records of the time. It covers all aspects of the tragedy from the initial crop failure, to evictions, emigration, workhouses and relief measures. The exhibition will be on display in the Castlebar Library during August and September.
