Mayor of Castlebar and Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere has welcomed the news that temporay resurfacing work will take place on an accident blackspot on the Newport road, but he is calling for a more permant soloution to the problem.
“I have spoken to director of services for Mayo County Council, Mr Seamus Granhan, about this spot and he has told me that there will be temporary resurfacing works carried out next week on the area,” Cllr Deere said. “The surface seems to be causing the problem but we need to have this stretch of road sorted out permanently to stop accidents happening there. Last weekend a further road traffic collision occurred on the same stretch of road. A single car crashed into the garden wall of a house and fell into the garden, which resulted in the car landing on its side. This highlights the serious nature of the incidents taking place on the stretch of road which has experienced numerous accidents in recent weeks and months.
“The incident today occurred only a week after the last collision, which had involved two cars on that occasion. It demonstrates that urgent action is required on improving the road as soon as possible before anyone is seriously injured or killed. Furthermore, I am pleading with road users to be careful on the road as many festivals are taking place this weekend around the county such the Belmullet Arts Festival and the road in question will be much busier than usual."
