Garda swoop on halting site following shooting

Gardai in Ballyhaunis backed up by members of the armed regional response unit swooped on an unofficial halting site in Ballyhaunis this week following the discharge of a shotgun at the site on Tuesday.

A local man working nearby was injured when the shotgun was discharged from the unofficial halting site, causing him superficial wounds.

The operation by gardaí saw the link road around Ballyhaunis closed off for 7.30am to 10.30am on Wednesday morning as gardaí carried out searches on the site. Up to a dozen caravans were parked in the unofficial halting site along the side of a public road and into a privately owned field. Gardaí seized a number of items following their search including a number of weapons which were not firearms, they also seized light industrial property. No arrests were made following the search, but gardaí are continuing their investigation into the shooting.
