Mayo gears up for culture night

On Friday September 24, a number of Mayo venues will keep their doors open later than usual. Why? Well, on the last Friday in September, along with a number of other counties nationwide, Mayo is hosting Culture Night.

The main focus of the evening will be on access, therefore participating venues will extend opening hours and organise events which are free of charge and open to the public. This year Mayo is hoping to build on the success of last year’s event with an increase in the number of cultural organisations participating. New parts of the county will be involved and new and existing audiences are invited to come out in force on the night. Whether you plan to keep it local and go along to what’s happening in you town or village or you decide to go further a field, or even aim to visit a number of venues on the night, you will not be disappointed.

With their programmes of activity now firmly in place for the night, Mayo’s participating cultural venues are Áras Inis Gluaire in Belmullet, Ballina Arts Centre and the Jackie Clarke Collection, Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle, Custom House Studios and Blink Visual Art in Westport, Linenhall Arts Centre and Artsquad in Castlebar, Claremorris Open Exhibition, and the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life. All venues have wonderfully diverse programmes, evidence of the wealth of cultural activity our county has to offer and have a variety of opening times ranging from 5pm to 12 midnight; you will need to contact each venue about their individual opening hours.
